Billionaire philanthropist Melinda French Gates has opened up about what led to her divorce from Bill Gates in 2021.
Shortly after announcing their separation, Microsoft confirmed reports by The New York Times that its board began an investigation with an outside law firm of an affair with an employee.
“Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,” a company spokesperson said.
But Gates denied that the relationship prompted him to leave the Microsoft board.
A spokeswoman for Gates told the Wall Street Journal: “There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably.”
‘How can this be? How can I get up? How am I going to move forward?’
During a conversation with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Melinda revealed that although she forgave Bill for the affair, there “came a point in time where there was enough there that I realised it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had.”
King then asks French Gates if she ever felt anger or pain, “because people look at you, Melinda French Gates, and say, ‘She has it all.'”
The former Microsoft computer scientist then admits that there were days when she would lie on the floor thinking, “How can this be? How can I get up? How am I going to move forward?”
French Gates does, however, acknowledge that it’s all part of the grieving process and that she is getting to the other side of her healing journey.
“You’re grieving a loss of something you thought…you had for your lifetime”: In an exclusive interview with @GayleKing, Melinda French Gates opens up about the grieving process after she ended her marriage with Bill Gates.
In the statement announcing their split, Bill and Melinda noted that they “will continue to work together” on their nonprofit, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
When asked by King how she is able to do that, French Gates admitted that while it has not been easy dealing with their separation privately over the last 18 months, she set her personal feelings aside because they both are so passionate about the institution they created.
“My values are baked into that institution,” she said. “I have always felt like it calls us to be our higher selves.”
Melinda French Gates opens up exclusively to @gayleking about continuing her work with the Gates Foundation, following her divorce from Bill Gates, saying, “I believe in that institution, I believe in what we do.”
